You want a physicist to speak at your funeral

Art_Beautiful Life“You want a physicist to speak at your funeral. You want the physicist to talk to your grieving family about the conservation of energy, so they will understand that your energy has not died. You want the physicist to remind your sobbing mother about the first law of thermodynamics; that no energy gets created in the universe, and none is destroyed. You want your mother to know that all your energy, every vibration, every Btu of heat, every wave of every particle that was her beloved child remains with her in this world. You want the physicist to tell your weeping father that amid energies of the cosmos, you gave as good as you got.

And at one point you’d hope that the physicist would step down from the pulpit and walk to your brokenhearted spouse there in the pew and tell him/her that all the photons that ever bounced off your face, all the particles whose paths were interrupted by your smile, by the touch of your hair, hundreds of trillions of particles, have raced off like children, their ways forever changed by you. And as your widow rocks in the arms of a loving family, may the physicist let him/her know that all the photons that bounced from you were gathered in the particle detectors that are her/his eyes, that those photons created within her/him constellations of electromagnetically charged neurons whose energy will go on forever.

And the physicist will remind the congregation of how much of all our energy is given off as heat. There may be a few fanning themselves with their programs as he says it. And he will tell them that the warmth that flowed through you in life is still here, still part of all that we are, even as we who mourn continue the heat of our own lives.

And you’ll want the physicist to explain to those who loved you that they need not have faith; indeed, they should not have faith. Let them know that they can measure, that scientists have measured precisely the conservation of energy and found it accurate, verifiable and consistent across space and time. You can hope your family will examine the evidence and satisfy themselves that the science is sound and that they’ll be comforted to know your energy’s still around. According to the law of the conservation of energy, not a bit of you is gone; you’re just less orderly.”

  2. This notion of transforming to other chemical parts after our human demise and intermingling as part of the new life struck me upon reading Bryant’s Thanatopsis years ago as a sophomore in college:

Yet a few days, and thee
The all-beholding sun shall see no more
In all his course; nor yet in the cold ground,
Where thy pale form was laid, with many tears,
Nor in the embrace of ocean, shall exist
Thy image. Earth, that nourished thee, shall claim
Thy growth, to be resolved to earth again,
And, lost each human trace, surrendering up
Thine individual being, shalt thou go
To mix forever with the elements,
To be a brother to the insensible rock
And to the sluggish clod, which the rude swain
Turns with his share, and treads upon. The oak
Shall send his roots abroad, and pierce thy mold.

    etc. etc.

I think there have been and probably still are people who knew of their brotherhood to the insensible rock even in Life. Alas, with “progress” we have lost such wisdom. Knowledge without wisdom is quite meaningless. And even fatally dangerous.

  4. Hello John, fellow commentators and readers,

I’m sure no one can say, with a straight face, that everything there is to know has been discovered. No scientist will say, “We have discovered everything that there is to know and our work is finished”.

In 19th-century Europe no one knew about bacteria. In a hospital in Vienna, Dr. Ignaz Semmelweis was appalled at the death rate of pregnant women who came to the hospital to give birth. The deaths were attributed to “labor fever.” After the women died, medical students would perform autopsies and then immediately proceed to treat live patients.

After much observation, Dr. Semmelweis arrived at a revolutionary conclusion: It might be contaminants on the medical students’ hands that were responsible for spreading death from one patient to another. Thus he ordered the interns to wash their hands in chlorinated water.

He then watched to see the results. “The history books tell us what happened next … In just three months the death rate fell from 18 percent to 1 percent” (McMillen and Stern, p. 20).

Yet more than 3,000 years earlier God had revealed to Moses the sanitary measures people were to take if they touched a corpse. First, they were to be considered “unclean” for seven days and had to wash with water on the third and seventh days (Numbers 19:11-14). As long as a person was unclean, he was to avoid social contact with others. This law also protected others from exposure to harmful bacteria, even though people at the time did not know such things existed. The washing procedure cleansed the person of germs, and exposure to fresh air and sunlight between washing assisted in further purification.

The Bible also shows, by example, how a wound should be treated and dressed. The story of the Good Samaritan tells us that he applied wine and oil to the victim’s wounds, then bound them up to protect them while they healed (Luke 10:34). The wine served as a disinfectant and the olive oil as a soothing lotion.

As The International Standard Bible Encyclopedia observes: “Olive oil has certain curative qualities and is still used in modern medicine.” The mixture of the wine and oil provided a disinfectant with which the Samaritan treated the victim (1986, “Oil”). These procedures were largely forgotten for centuries until rediscovered in recent decades.

To grasp how far ahead of its time the Bible’s instruction proved to be, consider the state of medical knowledge in Egypt, the most powerful nation during the period in which God revealed His health laws to Moses. The Egyptians suffered many diseases because they did not understand the health principles God gave Moses. Their ignorance is illustrated in the Ebers Papyrus, an Egyptian medical text dating from 1500 B.C. (about the time of Moses).

“The remedies it prescribes make modern readers cringe. A few of the treatments include: statue dust, beetle shells, mouse tails, cat hair, pig eyes, dog toes, breast milk, human semen, eel eyes, and goose guts … To splinters, the ancient Egyptian doctors applied a salve of worm blood and donkey dung. Since dung is loaded with tetanus spores, a simple splinter often resulted in a gruesome death from lockjaw” (S.I. McMillen, M.D., and David Stern, M.D., None of These Diseases, 2000, p. 10).

The Egyptians believed evil spirits were the cause of some illnesses. Consequently the priest-physicians applied “magical” cures. Conversely, the biblical instructions regarding health maintenance and recovery from illness involve application of cause-and-effect principles—based on true science—that were given thousands of years before scientists developed the technology that enabled them to discover germs, bacteria, viruses, genes and the like. Modern medical science has discovered many principles of good health, but God originated them.

Moses lived in Egypt while such misguided “cures” were being practiced. Raised in the royal court as an adopted son of the pharaoh’s daughter, he was “educated in all the wisdom of the Egyptians” (Acts 7:22)—which no doubt included these dangerous infection-spreading practices.

Had Moses simply relied on his own learning to write basic health instructions for the nation of Israel, we might expect them to include many Egyptian medical misconceptions. Yet we find not a single one. Where did the knowledge come from?

In contrast, God offered a surprising promise: “If you listen carefully to the voice of the Lord your God and do what is right in his eyes, if you pay attention to his commands and keep all his decrees, I will not bring on you any of the diseases I brought on the Egyptians, for I am the Lord, who heals you” (Exodus 15:26).

To this day cholera is endemic to many parts of the world and breaks out when unsanitary conditions prevail. This is especially true when the improper disposal of sewage is present, because the disease is usually spread from the fecal matter of cholera victims. Should we see a large-scale breakdown of sanitary measures, health authorities warn that today’s rapid travel could lead to ANOTHER cholera pandemic in weeks or months.

Yet thousands of years ago the Bible provided simple instruction that would prevent cholera, typhus, dysentery, hepatitis and other similar epidemics: “Designate a place outside the camp where you can go to relieve yourself. As part of your equipment have something to dig with, and when you relieve yourself, dig a hole and cover up your excrement” (Deuteronomy 23:12-13, NIV).

The foundation of good health is an adequate sanitary code. The Bible reveals the fundamentals of such a code. The Bible “deals with personal and public hygiene, water supply, sewage disposal, inspection and selection of food, and control of infectious disease, the psychological benefits and well-being of a positive attitude and forgiveness”. Although we take this knowledge for granted today, these principles came to be understood and accepted by scientists only in recent centuries.

In summary, since EVERYTHING there is to know and discover is not complete couldn’t one say that MAYBE one day, scientists might discover that we all indeed have a soul that lives on after we die? Why would we dismiss this theory outright? Is it JUST because it is written as truth in the Bible? If so, then how do we explain the proper medical and mental health instructions listed?

If we are finding out that the writers of the Bible were told instructions for medical and psychological good health, that turns out to be true, what other Bible truths are left to be discover as being “scientifically” correct?

Rumor has it Roy that Moses actually picked this little trick up from the Pharaoh’s physicians before he was forced to flee Egypt but who can say for sure.

Actually, if this was the same God that allegedly stopped the sun from rotating around the earth so Joshua could polish off the Amorites (Josh 10:12-13) might we find something in scripture that would explain why God decided to reverse this condition that we now find ourselves in today. I kinda liked the idea of being the center of the universe.

And Roy, if we do discover there is an eternal soul, will you be disappointed if instead of finding ourselves promenading along the golden sidewalks of Heaven we discover that we come back as an animal we always feared? Or do you think we get to pick the eternity of our choice?

Yes but you didn’t say everything that was a fact. Starting around the 33rd century BC “Egyptian medical practices went largely unchanged but were highly advanced for its time, including simple non-invasive surgery, setting of bones and an extensive set of pharmacopoeia.” It was all superstition and black magic.

“Miracles happen Mr Beck, it happened then with Joshua and it is happening today, miracles that is”

Ah, I see. The old “God works in mysterious ways” response. Can’t argue with that but since God is supposed to be the creator of all things, including natural laws, you’d think he would have informed whoever wrote the book of Joshua that the earth revolves around the sun? You’d also think that if he was smart enough to tell his chosen people to wash their hands after touching the rotting carcass of a cow he would have set them straight how the planet rotation thingy works, no?

Perhaps the writer of the book dozed off while God was dictating that part and he filled in the blanks himself later, based on ancient understanding of what makes things go bump in the night. Oh wait, this is supposed to be an eye-witness report, not one of those passages where God inspired the writer. Never mind.

Oh! Is that what you were trying to say. Well you should have put it that way instead of covering everything with biblical authority. BTW, what unknown truths do you think God is keeping from us? It would have been nice if he would have shared some of his health knowledge with a few other people other than a small band of nomads in one corner of the earth, being as that’s how they looked at the world then – flat with four corners. A lot of people died from dysentery before they learned that little jewel after someone with the “good book” came along to show them the error of their hand washing ways.

    • I’ll answer that. Scientist’s do not consider the existence of a soul (or of God) a testable theory (or even a hypothesis). You’re right someday they might, but there is an awfully long way to go before they are even considered. As they say, never say never. The direction science is taking us is away from these sorts of beliefs, so we’d have to see a big reversal if religious answers will ever be considered seriously in the context of scientific questions. That said, the big cosmological questions do admit the possibility of some sort of master at work (whether something called God or some far future intelligence). But big cosmological questions are borderline science since they are highly speculative and not presently testable. And as far as the Bible goes, most of it strikes me as parable and story to demonstrate morals.

  8. “Just ONE psychological truth in the Bible. FORGIVENESS. It’s a line in the Lords Prayer, “Forgive those who trespass against you”.”

Forgiveness is indeed a good thing Roy but it was something talked about by Lao Tzu back in the 6th century BCE, centuries before the new testament mentioned it and in a culture much more diverse than that in the middle-east at the time. If the concept of forgiveness is something that you got from your readings of judeo-christian scripture, fine. Just don’t attribute its origins to the bible.

Yeh, I know. They weren’t into that stuff like the mystics of the ancient fertile crescent were. Maybe they knew something that 1st century xians didn’t – yet.

Let me set you straight here on something too. Your not only preaching to the choir here but someone who left the choir a long time ago. Your not “enlightening” me anymore than I have done for myself. But rather than spell all of that out here for you, here’s something I wrote on this about three years ago. How I Learned to Move Beyond the God of My Religious Upbringing

And let me close with this. It is more than presumptuous of you to come in here and speak in philosophical terms and expect everyone to be awed by your divine insights. You accept what you do purely on faith as I did at one time. But a review of literature outside the purview of the church convinced me that they have stacked the deck in their favor. I can’t say their isn’t some metaphysical force out there that had a hand in creating the universe. What I can say with near absolute certainty is that if there be a God, it won’t be the institutional version that the church over all these centuries has created.

We’d all like to have that assurance that there is some rational reason why we are here and that there is a life beyond this one. That sense has imbued all cultural thoughts for ages. But the fact remains that we don’t have a real clue what is beyond this life other than the tales that have been passed on down to us by the ancients, and in the case of the judeo-christian religion, by people who thought the sun revolved around the earth and that an old man who heard a voice in his head in Ur of the Chaldees some 5000 years ago was the sole recipient of the Creator’s instruction to mankind. To accept all of this requires a lot of faith but outside of that it just doesn’t stand up to close scrutiny.

” WE LIVE UNDER AUTHORITY. Do you deny this? “

Hey bud, there’s no need to shout. What’s your point anyway? If I agree we do live under some form of authority (which of course we do) then I would automatically accept your version of biblical authority? Read my story I gave you a link to above to answer that question.

Respond to all of this if you must, but I am beginning to tire of going around in circles with someone who appears to like chasing their tail. Have a nice life Roy, just don’t get pissed off at people or act superior to those who don’t share your expectations about it.

Larry Beck, “…we don’t have a real clue what is beyond this life…”

This was my point Sir, that to outright dismiss the idea of the Soul and an afterlife is wrong because we do not know yet scientifically one way or the other. I then showed how the Bible has medical and psychological instructions that at the time, come out of nowhere. These instructions, although not scientifically explained, are scientifically factual. Hence the fact is that one day scientist may discover other Truths Given are indeed factual.

I read your article Larry, all 2,282 words. I am much like you in that I was raised Christian, in my 20’s I had to find out if what I was taught was true, and if what the Bible says is true. Is the Bible really God revealing Himself to us? After I read many books for, and against this, I came to the conclusion it is Truth.

        God reveals Himself through

        1) Creation
        2) Conscience
        3) Christ
        4) The Canon of Scripture
        5) The Lives of Believers

The basis of God’s election is a mystery only known to God. We may not understand how it can be that He is able to elect some while passing by others.

All caps is considered shouting, forgot, sorry. I was just using it to highlight certain words. The point being we all live under authority, every man, woman and child on this planet. I too am ex-military and believe the real American meaning of GOD AND COUNTRY is how our Founders believed : “A nation of patriotic citizens who dedicate themselves to protecting and defending ‘America the Beautiful’ and our basic human freedoms from tyranny and oppression, as well as showing our love and respect for God by protecting and defending all peoples and all Creation.”

If we loose this type of passion (God and Country) I feel we will eventually descend into the chaos of indifference, which is worse than any evil perpetrated by man.

      • I’ll address your most recent reply John, 3 points you make.

Concerning wine as a disinfectant see wiki/Wine_and_health. Although it is mainly about consumption I read…

“While treating gladiators in Asia Minor, the Roman physician Galen would use wine as a disinfectant for all types of wounds, even soaking exposed bowels before returning them to the body. During his four years tending to the gladiators only five deaths occurred, compared to sixty deaths under the watch of the physician before him.”

        Refer to wiki/Wine_vinegar, more proof.

Concerning the Scripture verses you mentioned…they are taken out of context and uses a corrupted translation.

Just one example is the “rape” reference in Deuteronomy 22

“But if a man finds a betrothed young woman in the countryside, and the man forces (chazaq) her and lies with her, then only the man who lay with her shall die. But you shall do nothing to the young woman; there is in the young woman no sin deserving of death, for just as when a man rises against his neighbor and kills him, even so is this matter. For he found her in the countryside, and the betrothed young woman CRIED OUT, but there was no one to save her.

If a man finds a young woman who is a virgin, who is not betrothed, and he seizes her and lies with her, and THEY ARE found out, then the man who lay with her shall give to the young woman’s father fifty shekels of silver, and she shall be his wife because he has humbled her; he shall not be permitted to divorce her all his days.” Deuteronomy 22:25-29 NKJV

        Concerning the Theory of Evolution…

In science, a theory is an explanation. So it’s the “explanation” of evolution.

It’s not a law because you can’t prove it. How can you? There are multiple ways to interpret the fossil record. You can say, as just an analogy, “Satan put those fossils there to trick us to believe in evolution!”. See, right there, you can’t exactly say “no, that’s not right, because Satan is not real”, because to say that, you first must prove Satan doesn’t exist, which is impossible, and hence there’s no way to refute that statement (unless you go into the philosophical idea of burden of proof, but that’s more towards philosophy and not science).

The only way to prove evolution is to demonstrate it in real time. Basically, you need to show that you can get a human being from a single cell evolving (excluding embryonic cells of course). And before that, get a living cell from non-living organic matter.

In science, a theory is the logical connection of several laws. People think that theory means something that is not proven, a conjecture, and I agree this is wrong, but to equate, say, the Theory of Gravity to the same level as the Theory of Evolution is utter madness. We can demonstrate the Theory of Gravity but we cannot demonstrate the Theory of Evolution.

        and they be found; KJV
and the matter come to judgment: DOUAY-RHEIMS

and they are caught in the act, NRSV
        and they are discovered, NASB
        If they are caught, CEV

There are other OT passages where rape is mentioned and none of them use the Hebrew word taphas with anah. Rather, the authors use the word chazaq (or some similar word) with anah to convey rape.

I really don’t know Hebrew but I do know scholars look for meanings of words by meanings elsewhere in the text for translation help. To be “found out” is a poor translation for the Hebrew words that convey consenting sex.

On a side note the rape Laws also protect women’s rights. In some cultures victims of rape where killed, honor killings…

      • Or how about this little gem for “women’s rights”, Deuteronomy 22:23-24

If within the city a man comes upon a maiden who is betrothed, and has relations with her, you shall bring them both out of the gate of the city and there stone them to death: the girl because she did not cry out for help though she was in the city, and the man because he violated his neighbors wife.

Seems your bipolar god doesn’t give a damn about the rape victim, just the violation of another mans “property”.

      • Or would you like to talk about Women’s Rights as sex slaves?

        Exodus 21:7-11

When a man sells his daughter as a slave, she will not be freed at the end of six years as the men are. If she does not please the man who bought her, he may allow her to be bought back again. But he is not allowed to sell her to foreigners, since he is the one who broke the contract with her. And if the slave girl’s owner arranges for her to marry his son, he may no longer treat her as a slave girl, but he must treat her as his daughter. If he himself marries her and then takes another wife, he may not reduce her food or clothing or fail to sleep with her as his wife. If he fails in any of these three ways, she may leave as a free woman without making any payment. (Exodus 21:7-11 NLT)

You see, Roy, this is a bible battle you will loose. I’m serious, i can go on and on and on and on, match you and best you at every turn…. but i suppose you’ll just say i’m quoting a “Demonic translation” right?

  9. My father just died. He was an ardent atheist like his father before him and me after him. I was asked by my mother to give a speech in his funeral. I am not a physicist, and most propably I will not tell people anything about his atoms, but what I will say is that I loved him, that I will dearly miss him, but that he had a woderfull life regarless of all the hardships he had to suffer and that he left us a legacy as an example of someone who worked for a better world. Is that not enough? It is enough for me… I sincerely hope that someone can honestly say the same about me in my funeral, when I die.

    • I’m sorry to hear about your dad.

“I loved him, that I will dearly miss him, but that he had a wonderful life regardless of all the hardships he had to suffer and that he left us a legacy as an example of someone who worked for a better world”

That is enough. Who can possibly ask for more than the truth? Only a good man, a truly good man, will leave people in a position to say “he worked for a better world.” That’s not just a man, but rather a champion of our species. Some battles are large, most are small, but all are just as important. To say of a man he stood up when others wouldn’t and fought those battles (win or loose) is priceless. To be counted in the phalanx of humanists is the greatest honour.

  10. So beautiful and warm and compassionate, and strangely, it is the way death feels, as if they are still in the air around us, fleeting fragments. Very satisfying to hear it described from within a scientist’s worldview and with such beautiful writing. Thanks again! Kat

  11. Thank you John for this post. It could not have come at a better time nor could I have been more receptive to its truth, beauty and comfort. Thank you my friend.
